The Foundation
Building sustainable cities together through Fondation Université Gustave Eiffel
To strengthen our resources and strategic ambition, our university decided to create its own partnership foundation: Fondation Université Gustave Eiffel. The project was validated after several months of work by the university's Board of Directors on 30 June 2022. Objectives: in collaboration with the individuals and legal entities concerned, imagine, design and build the complex and international living spaces that are our cities by providing them with the necessary elements to understand the issues and challenges. In short, the aim is to build sustainable cities together.

Université Gustave Eiffel is a melting pot of exceptional skills, bringing together researchers, engineers and students from a wide range of scientific fields. This is exactly what is needed to understand the city and its metabolism in a fast-changing world and to strive, with maximum interdisciplinarity, to understand the needs of residents, elected officials and companies. The Foundation is designed to combine multiple perspectives to enrich each person’s understanding and facilitate the search for adapted solutions for each city.

The Foundation’s projects
The 2022-2027 campaign is based on five priorities:
- Develop transdisciplinary research and collaborative innovation with a high societal impact to meet the challenges of the cities and territories of today and tomorrow.
- Systematically integrate social and inclusivity dimensions into work on the city of tomorrow
- Reduce the negative environmental impacts of cities, especially on the climate
- Support equal opportunities for each student and encourage their participation in innovative projects
- Experiment and evaluate innovations that will build the cities of tomorrow in interaction with local areas.
These five priorities are structured around the following major themes, chosen for their multidisciplinary nature in terms of mobilising expertise, their structuring effect on the city of tomorrow and their innovative nature, either because the subject has not yet been dealt with to any great extent or because it requires a lot of innovation:
Examples of actions : identifying and responding to the challenges of individual electric travel; responding to the challenges of mobility for seniors and people with disabilities; assessing the impacts of short circuits; the metabolism of urban development projects and their impacts in order to improve their design and use; understanding changes in urban supply chains linked to the development of e-commerce; transforming road infrastructures into ecological and climate-friendly corridors; experimenting with flexible and sustainable urban and peri-urban travel solutions on campuses, etc.
Examples of actions : conducting research on the theme of resilience and the electrification of our lifestyles; assessing and mapping the hydroclimatic risks of cities, exchanges and transfers of practices between cities affected by climate change (application to the city of Abidjan); creating a think tank on the theme of adaptation and urban resilience to climate change, etc.
Examples of actions : understanding the components of the urban metabolism; developing a dashboard for the circular economy; minimising the costs and environmental impact of waste management (including from the construction industry), from collection to sorting, reuse and re-employment; seeking solutions to meet the target of Zero Net Artificialisation (ZAN); supporting local areas and measuring the impact of the climate on biodiversity and urban densification; repairing and reusing objects intended for waste; reducing water consumption in a context of global warming; improving the data efficiency and transparency to security applications of industrial artificial intelligence, etc.
Examples of actions : developing depolluting facades and roads by producing innovative, biocompatible, robust and sustainable materials; rethinking public spaces to make them more multifunctional using nature-based solutions; visualising electromagnetic waves and monitoring changes; promoting heritage in the city; providing support for women by women in their studies and careers; proposing a support kit for students living in insecurity; supporting student initiatives and developing training through actions in connection with local areas, etc.
Examples of actions : working on water management and thermal comfort with Ivory Coast and Madagascar; initiating citizen participation with several Maghreb countries, particularly Morocco and Tunisia, on the theme of road safety and transport infrastructures, etc.
Examples of actions : Examples of actions: helping investors and financiers to develop sustainable finance, without greenwashing; offering training in sustainable finance for finance professionals, etc.
Examples of actions : establishing a forecast of urban futures using all modes of expression such as frescoes, comics, videos, etc.; collaborating with the organisers of the 2024 Olympic Games to provide them access to all the resources of the university and its sponsors; making the urban innovations observatory a national platform for presenting techniques and good practices in the field of sustainable cities, etc.
